Shine on....shine on Harvest Moon

Now for those that can recall the lyrics to this song…welcome to my age group although I prefer to relate to the Liza Minnelli version from the ’70s!!

Nevertheless, the plea from a young man for the moon to provide a romantic glow to aid in the wooing of his sweetheart is a hopeless cause, for the moon is unable to shine from its rocky pockmarked surface, it is unable to generate a light of its own. What it is designed to do is reflect the light from the sun and it does that very successfully. We too are very much like the moon, we were created to reflect light, to reflect glory; God’s glory.

Much like the moon is perfectly positioned to interact with the sun and the earth, revolving around both at the same time, reflecting the sun's light onto the earth, we too need to be positioned correctly in order to look to God and reflect his glory to the earth. Contrary to belief the world does not revolve around us, God does not exist to please us (although through his dealings with us we are frequently pleased, more often than we sometimes deserve) – for if he did exist to just please us wouldn’t we always be pain-free, disease-free, trouble-free, worry-free, fear-free, wouldn’t we always be pleased?

The bible is clear why God created us - “Bring my sons from afar and my daughters from the end of the earth, everyone who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory, whom I formed and made.” Isaiah 43:6a-7

So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. Genesis 1:27

We are created in the image of God and an image is intended to show what the original looks like, to reflect the real thing. You show the photo (image) of yourself on your passport at the border so that the officials can see that you are the original, the real McCoy. God made us in His image, for His glory, to put his glory on display that his people might know him, and love him, and reflect him, to reflect the original.

Our job is to continue to reflect His life—even through our suffering—in a weary and often dismal world….so let’s shine like the moon, reflecting God’s glory in our words, attitudes, actions and by doing so we will illuminate a real harvest.
